The words we speak and the thoughts we hold shape more than just our mood, they influence our entire reality. This is especially true when it comes to your health and your yoga practice. We’ve seen firsthand how the way someone talks about themselves and their practice can either build them up or hold them back. If you think your yoga practice is frustrating or difficult, that belief often becomes your experience. But when you choose words that encourage growth and kindness, your practice transforms, and so does your life.
Let’s explore how the power of your words can change your health and wellness journey, with practical examples and tips to help you become more mindful of your inner dialogue.
How Words Shape Your Yoga Practice and Your Health
Yoga is more than physical movement; it’s a mental and emotional journey. The way you describe your practice to yourself sets the tone for your progress.
For example, if you tell yourself, “I’m terrible at balancing poses,” your mind focuses on failure, making it harder to improve. On the other hand, if you say, “I’m learning to find balance step by step,” you create space for patience and growth. This shift in language encourages your brain to look for solutions and celebrate small wins, and we love the small wins here at Wolf & Lion.
Our health is deeply connected to our mindset. The words we use about our bodies and health can either support healing or create resistance, and even sometimes, dis-ease.
Imagine someone recovering from an injury who constantly says, "I can’t do this.” or "my body is isn't strong enough". These statements reinforce limitations and slow recovery. Instead, saying, “My body is healing and getting stronger,” encourages a mindset that supports wellness and also acknowledges where they are at at that time.
Another example is how we talk about food and exercise. Most of do this. Labeling foods as “bad” or “off-limits” can create guilt and unhealthy relationships with eating. Using words like “nourishing” and “energizing” helps build a positive connection with what we consume and how we move.

Tips to Be More Mindful About Your Words:
Changing your inner dialogue takes practice, but it’s a powerful step toward transforming your reality. Here are some tips to help you become more mindful of your words and thoughts:
Pause before speaking or thinking
Notice when negative or limiting words arise. Take a moment to breathe and choose kinder, more supportive language. Meditation is a great way to become more aware of your thoughts/words.
Use affirmations that feel true
Instead of forcing overly positive statements, find affirmations that resonate with your current experience, such as “I am open to learning” or “I am making progress.”
Journal your thoughts
Writing down your thoughts can help you spot patterns in your language. When you see negative phrases, rewrite them into positive or neutral ones.
Surround yourself with positive language
Listen to podcasts, read books, or follow teachers who use encouraging and mindful language about health and wellness.
Practice gratitude
Yes, we mention this one a lot, but there's so much power here. Expressing gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant, changing the words you use about yourself and your journey.
Give your people permission to call you out
Give permission to the people closest to you to call you out on any negative self-talk. If they hear you say something that is a thought process that doesn't support your higher good, they get to remind you to change your language.
The words you choose have the power to shape your experience in life.. When you speak kindly to yourself and focus on growth, your reality begins to reflect that positivity. Your yoga practice becomes more enjoyable, your health journey more hopeful, and your overall well-being becomes stronger.
