7 Ways to Enjoy the Moment

The Den by Wolf & Lion / 7 Ways to Enjoy the Moment

How often do you find yourself saying "how is it already _____." Or "how has it already been a year/etc."? 🙋‍♀️ Definitely me. Life often rushes by in a blur of tasks, deadlines, and distractions. I realized that finding ways to truly enjoy the moment can bring calm, joy, and a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us, but it takes conscious effort. This post explores seven practical ways that I practice to savor the present moment, and all can be done off of your yoga mat.

1. Practice Mindful Breathing

This one is old news but I still don't think people practice it enough. One of the simplest ways to anchor yourself in the present is through mindful breathing. Taking slow, deliberate breath helps calm the mind and body, making it easier to focus on the here and now. You can do it before you walk out of the house, in the car or even in a bathroom stall. Seriously such a simple thing, but greatly underutilized.

Try this: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four. Hold the breath for four counts, then exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts. Repeat this cycle 3-5 times. This technique reduces stress and sharpens your awareness of the moment.

2. Engage Your Senses Fully

Enjoying the moment means tuning into your senses. Instead of rushing through experiences, pause and notice the small details around you.

For example, when drinking a cup of tea or coffee, pay attention to the warmth of the cup, the aroma, the taste, and the texture. I also like to check in on how that first sip makes me feel in my body. When outside, listen to the sounds of birds or the rustle of leaves. This sensory focus grounds you in the present and enriches your experience.

3. Capture Moments with Journaling

Writing about your current feelings, surroundings, or thoughts can deepen your connection to the moment. Journaling encourages reflection and helps you appreciate small details you might otherwise overlook. Sometimes just writing a few things down is enough, I like to add lil doodles and often times will add things I've collected such as stickers, business cards or a feather I found on my walk.

Try keeping a daily journal where you note three things you noticed or enjoyed that day. This habit builds gratitude and makes you more aware of the present.

4. Take a Digital Detox Break

Technology often pulls us away from the present. Notifications, emails, and social media can fragment our attention and increase stress. Not to mention, shorten our attention span. Not gonna lie but this one is tough for me because building a business does require a lot of time at a computer, but when I set aside time away from the screen, get outside and go for a walk, I always feel reset and ready for the next task.

Set aside specific times during the day to disconnect from all screens. Use this time to engage in the activities listed above like mindful breathing, nature walk or journaling. This break helps you reconnect with your surroundings and your own thoughts without distraction.

5. Practice Slow Movement

Whether it’s walking, stretching, or yoga, moving slowly and deliberately can help you enjoy the moment. Slow movement encourages mindfulness and body awareness.

Try a slow walk outside, noticing each step and the sensation of your feet touching the ground. This practice not only calms the mind but also strengthens your connection to your body and environment. I am not a slow walker, but I do intentionally slow my yoga practice down. I try to feel every movement, staying present in my body the whole time.

6. Create a Ritual of Appreciation

Develop a personal ritual that marks a moment of appreciation each day. This could be lighting a candle, sipping tea, or listening to a favorite song. I love to do self massage of my face in the morning. It's very centering and helps wakes me up, making me ready for the day. You have to find YOUR thing, your ritual that helps you ground. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just something you appreciate.

For example, every evening, take five minutes to reflect on something positive from your day. This ritual trains your mind to focus on what matters and brings a sense of peace and fulfillment.

7. Hang With Community

Being with a community of people I enjoy being around always keeps me in the present moment. Whether it's just a friend and we're catching up over coffee or a group of friends and it's game night. Not only does laughing and the feeling of belonging boost our mood, those special moments keep us grounded in the present.
