At The Den, our goal is to give our students a well-rounded, down-to-earth, accessible approach to their wellness journey. Our team brings a variety of backgrounds and teaching styles to the table, and that diversity is something we're proud of.
To keep some cohesion across our offerings while giving our instructors the freedom to stay true to their individual styles, we're rolling out a Word and Pose of the Month starting in May. Each month, we'll highlight a specific yoga pose alongside a meaningful word, bringing intention and movement together to deepen your connection to the practice, to yourself, and to your wellness goals.
This month's pose is Warrior 1 and the word is consistency, two powerful themes that complement each other and offer a solid foundation for your practice. Our teachers will weave one or both into their classes wherever it naturally fits. For example, you wouldn't cue Warrior 1 in a Yin class, but Caterpillar pose might show up to open the calves and achilles, the same areas Warrior 1 targets.
Let's explore why these were chosen and how you can bring them into your practice at The Den.
Why Warrior 1 for May?
Warrior 1, or Virabhadrasana I, is a classic standing pose that embodies strength, focus, and balance. It requires grounding through the feet, engagement of the legs, and an open chest reaching upward. This pose builds stamina and stability while encouraging a sense of courage and determination.
Choosing Warrior 1 for May fits well with the energy of spring. It's a time of growth and renewal. It invites you to stand tall, face challenges head-on, and cultivate inner power. The pose also improves posture and stretches the hips and shoulders, making it a great full-body stretch that prepares you for more advanced poses.
The Meaning Behind Consistency
Consistency is the word we chose for May because it reflects the key to progress in yoga and life. Yoga is not about perfection or quick results. It’s about showing up regularly, even when it feels challenging or your schedule is busy.
By practicing consistently, you build strength, flexibility, and mental clarity over time. Small daily efforts add up to big changes. Consistency also helps you develop discipline and patience, qualities that extend beyond the mat into everyday life.
This month, we encourage you to focus on consistency in your practice. Set realistic goals, attend classes regularly, and notice how your body and mind respond. Our teachers will weave the theme of consistency into their guidance, reminding you that steady effort is more valuable than occasional intensity.
How to Put Warrior 1 and Consistency into Action
Here are some practical ways to bring Warrior 1 and consistency into your routine:
Come to the studio! It's the best way to experience the full benefits of this month’s focus from the instructors themselves and practice alongside other students.
Set a weekly schedule: Choose specific days and times to attend classes or practice at home. Treat these appointments as non-negotiable.
Use Warrior 1 as a daily stretch: Even a few minutes holding the pose can build strength and focus.
Track your progress: Keep a journal to note how you feel before and after practice.
Community supports consistency: Practicing with others, like at The Den, can boost motivation and accountability. The Wolf & Lion community is always so supportive!
Ask questions: Our teachers are happy to help you modify poses or develop a plan that fits your lifestyle. If you want to dive deeper, we also offer 1:1 coaching.
